Today I thought to do something out of character by giving unsolicited medical advice. I was coerced into seeing an optician recently and I learnt a lot in the process. As professionals, we're so busy with work and those who are health conscious count calories. What most people don't count is how much light enters the eyes on a daily basis. We're so busy most times that we don't notice that we stare at a lot of bright lights, electronic billboards, computer screens, mobile devices, TVs, the sun and other light-emitting sources and it doesn't actively register in our heads that our eyes have a threshold and when push comes to shove, our eyes can affect our performance.
WHAT IF YOUR MOOD SWINGS ARE CAUSED BY YOUR EYES?
I know a couple of people who become irritable after a couple of hours of working, others complain about things getting blurry, headaches and problems with maintaining focus over a period of time. A lot of software engineers spend 70% of their time in front of computer screens. The learning curve for young developers is so steep that it's expected that one should be able to invest as much time as possible at the very beginning. The cover picture is in reference to Sharingan, an ocular doujutsu (power) that featured heavily in Naruto Shippuden (an anime that you should watch if you haven't already😉)
A SOLUTION?
It's not unusual for developers to spend as much as 13 hours a day in front of computer screens. Screen brightness and eye protection features on devices don't do enough to fix things. It recently occurred to me that people who are believed to have mood swings and are easily irritable may just be suffering from overexposure to light which can make them develop headaches and also influence their mood. The point of all of these is to admonish professionals to get their eyes checked. I invested in a pair of photochromic glasses and the dividends are quite remarkable when I compare the brightness with the glasses on and without it. This isn't a sponsored post as such you can be certain I'm recommending this because I truly care.
FINALLY...
Sure, people will tease you a bit (like I was teased) after getting glasses however I can assure you that there is no glory in suffering unnecessarily, having very red eyes, watery eyes or having to rub your eyes a lot isn't fun, neither are those brief seconds when you become disoriented as everything becomes blurry. Protecting your eyes today is insurance that can help ensure you get more visual mileage from your eyes.
